We have heard the quote time and time again, “Find something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life”. Oftentimes, we brush it off and believe that it’s too far-fetched. But what if it’s not? I can tell you firsthand, there is a position out there that is perfect for you. The first step is finding your passion, your true passion. You will never excel in a career if you don’t genuinely enjoy what you do. There is no timeframe on when you can change your career. It is never “too early” or “too late” to start on your journey to a fulfilling career. You are the only thing standing in your way, so what are you doing? Take the leap, keep reading to learn more.
Find time to Self-reflect
Self-reflection is the best way to find what you are lacking in your life. The first step to moving forward towards a fulfilling career is to think about what you’re missing. What is your current position lacking? What is your personality like, and what makes you tick? Think about things you can change, and things out of your control. You cannot find what you want to do without really knowing yourself. Finding who you are is really the first step in basically any decision you make.
Visualize your ideal situation
The next step to finding a fulfilling career is to identify your ideal situation. What are your desires? When you think of the future, what would you like to be doing? Where would you like to be? These are all questions that should be running through your head. You can’t just expect an amazing, fulfilling career to fall into your hands. Getting to your ideal situation is something that requires work, and dedication. Once you define your ideal situation doesn’t mean that it’s automatically the next step. You might have to start at rock bottom in a whole new industry to get there. You don’t just walk into a senior-level position.
Identify your priorities
What are your priorities? Are you a workaholic, or do you prefer more of a work-life balance? Take some time to think about some causes you care about. Are you more inclined to support non-profit organizations? Finding a career that aligns with your passions and priorities is important when it comes to finding fulfillment. Have you taken a minute to think about the things you value? Are these important to you? You should never accept a position that goes against your values. This just sets you up for failure and disappointment.
Do research
There are a lot of resources available nowadays. After identifying what you lack, what you want, and your priorities, take time to go online. Scour through different job boards, reading about different positions. Take a personality test, most of the time they tell you what careers best suit your type. Talk to your friends, family, associates about what they notice about you, and what they picture you doing.
Finding a fulfilling career is not an easy task. But once you do, you will be thankful you took the steps to get there. You should never feel “burnt out” at your job. Instead, you should feel excited, motivated, and always looking for ways to improve.
