Why Write a Thank you Email?

Writing a thank-you email can be a big sign of your interest in the position. It allows for you to show your appreciation to the interviewer for taking the time to meet with you. A thank-you email can help you stand out amongst other candidates since not everyone writes one. Regardless of whether or not you got the job, the person interviewing you took the time, and they deserve that gratitude.

What Should I Include?

The email should always start off with a thank you. Thank them for their time and consideration. The email can then transition into your explanation of why you are interested, and why you think you might be a good fit. It’s always a good idea to make reference to something you discussed during your interview to add a personal touch to the email. The email should not be very long and should be easy to follow. Make sure to include that you are willing to answer any other questions that may arise.

Example

Sending the Email

Before sending the email, there are certain things to double-check.

Subject Line: Your subject line should be something like “Interview Follow-up” or “Thank you for the interview”

Recipients: Oftentimes, there are multiple interviewers, ensure that you are sending an email to everyone involved, and to the right email.

Review the email: Before sending, make sure that you read the email through. Check for typos, grammatical errors, and overall tone. Sending an email with any errors can do the exact opposite of what you’re trying to do.

Timing: You should never wait more than 24 hours to send a thank you email. The sooner you send it, the better it looks. It keeps you fresh in their minds and allows them to make a direct connection.
