6 Questions to Ask in an Interview
6 Questions to Ask in an Interview

You are wrapping up your interview, it seems to have gone well. Then the interviewer asks “Do you have any questions?”. The answer should always be yes! You should have a list of questions prepared for any interview. This is important because one, it shows the interviewer you are prepared and interested. It also will allow you to learn more about the company and the position. You should ask questions you genuinely want to know the answer to, not ask them just because. The questions you prepare can make a big difference. If you are asking engaging questions, this could help you to stand out amongst other candidates. It also allows you to connect more with the interviewer, as long as they are relevant.

1. How would you describe the work environment?

This question can allow you to see if the environment fits your personality. It is so important for all employees and management to feel comfortable at work. If the environment is rigid and professional, and you are more fun and laid back, it might not be the best fit for you.

2. If I were hired, what should I expect day to day?

When asking this question, it is important to really listen to the answer. This can give you a lot of insight into whether or not the position is for you. It goes beyond the job description and will allow you to really understand the responsibilities.

3. Is there room for growth with the company?

This question is so important for several reasons. One reason being, it will allow you to understand whether or not this is a “dead-end” job. It also helps the interviewer to understand your goals and can show them your genuine interest in the position.

4. What is your experience working here?/What do you like about working here?

This will allow you to get a glimpse into the environment of the company. If the interviewer has a short, not detailed answer, they might not be that happy with their position. Most people who are genuinely happy in their position typically have multiple reasons they like it.

5. Can you tell me more about the people I would be working with?

You should always be curious about learning who you would directly be working with. It is important to know how large the team is, and how closely you will be working together. Personalities need to mesh well in team-orientated environments, so this question expresses your interest in that.

6. What are the next steps? / Is there anyone else I should be meeting with?

This question can show that you are interested in the position and eager to hear more. It also shows initiative which is ideal when looking for candidates.

There are really no right or wrong questions to ask in an interview. During a first interview, however, it is not the best time to be asking about money or benefits. This can give the impression that you are more motivated by money than work ethic. It is important to ask engaging questions that will signal to the interviewer that you are interested, and allow for you to determine if you still feel like you would be a good fit.
