You’ve put a lot of time and energy into your job search and you finally get the offer. It’s an exciting step to receive a job offer and it’s easy to think of it as the end of the process. Not so fast! This is a new phase that is important to navigate carefully in order to set up an optimal work-life experience for months and years to come. Here are the 4 important steps to consider once you have received the offer.
Ask for time before making a decision.
Giving yourself time before accepting is important! It gives you a chance to review the offer, and ask for any changes you may need. If the offer is not what you wanted, or you were expecting something else, now is the time to create a counter offer! If the offer matches your desires, then it’s time to write your acceptance offer. The letter should be brief, and should include the following; an expression of gratitude, an overview of the terms and conditions, and your starting date.
Put in notice at current position
After reviewing your job offer, your next step is to write a letter of resignation from your current position. This is always a crucial step because it is important to leave your company on a high note. The standard resignation letter allows for two weeks. It is also a good idea to start asking your coworkers and management team for some letters of recommendation, or for them to write you one on LinkedIn. Depending on your situation, it is always a good idea to give yourself time between leaving your job, and starting your new one. This allows time for you to get whatever you may need.
Close any other job applications you may have open.
Once you accept the offer, it is important to close any other applications that you have open. This shows your professionalism to the other companies, and allows room for the other applicants to speed up the process. It is also a nice gesture to let them know of any other potential candidates you may be able to refer to them. This also gives you an opportunity to create more connections for your network.
Keep contact with your new manager.
Keeping contact with your new manager allows you to become more prepared for your new role. It allows you to discuss more things, and develop more of an understanding of your role. Keeping in contact with them also allows for you to develop a stronger professional relationship, allowing more room for growth. It can also help relieve some of the pre-starting jitters!
It is always important to keep a network of people, so the actions you take during your transition can really make a difference!
