Our interview question of the week is: “give me an example of how you set goals.”
What to listen for:
This question focuses on the candidate’s values, motivations, and processes. We also gain insight into what the candidate is passionate about.
Consider how quickly the candidate is able to answer the question. Do they appear to have a practice of setting goals for themselves? If they have to think about it for a longer period of time to come up with an answer, they probably are not very experienced with goal setting.
Observe the steps they take and the organization of their thoughts around goal setting. Do they approach from a big-picture perspective or are they more focused on the finer details? Are they procedural or more free-flowing and multi-tasking in their approach?
The answer to this question can vary greatly and it will help you determine if your candidate is a good fit for the company’s mission and style of work.
