Overcoming Obstacles in a Career Change

Moving from one industry to another can be overwhelming at times. There are many obstacles to overcome. But if you make it through the difficult times, you are well on your way to finding yourself a fulfilling career. Finding out which skills are transferable, which may not be, and overall, how your experience aligns with the new career path is so important.

Building/Bringing a set of skills

In some cases, you may find yourself already possessing the skills needed to be successful in your new career. Other times, you may need to build a new skillset. It is important to keep a positive attitude when it comes to this obstacle because it can definitely get overwhelming. Focus on what you have, and what you can learn. Soft skills such as communication, leadership, etc… can be valuable in any position, so if you need a pick me up, focus on the fact that you possess those!

Finding a new network

Whenever you enter an industry, it is important to find others within it to connect with. So if you are switching industries, it’s almost like starting fresh. Having a network is one of the most important things you can do for your career. Be sure to introduce yourself to new coworkers, and ask them to introduce you to their network.

Lower compensation

When it comes to a career change, it is important to acknowledge the fact that you most likely will make less money to start. When starting a new role in a new industry, it is likely that you start in an entry-level position. It is important to adjust accordingly. Be sure that you are not taking an unlivable wage for yourself, but be sure to stay positive, everyone has to start somewhere!
