Creating the perfect resume can be challenging, with so many DO’s and DON’Ts. If you are wondering what some of those may be, check out our blog so you don’t miss any of our top tips. In addition to that, do you know that there are certain buzz words that can turn people away from your resume? Your resume can go from the top of the pile to the bottom with just one phrase.
“Responsibilities include..”
Employers don’t need to see every detail of your previous job. That can be better explained during an interview. Instead, direct the attention to how you contributed to the company. Long lists can take away from the strong points you are trying to make.
“Familiar with..”
Instead of just blatantly listing,” Familiar with Microsoft”, take the time to write out the details, “5 years of experience using Microsoft”. It can make all the difference.
“Hardworking..”
Anyone can say that they are hardworking. Instead of filling this space up with non-specifics, take time to think about an example that shows your efforts.
“Expert..”
This one word can be a huge red flag for some. It can portray you as “full of yourself”. Instead, explain your experience. Allow them to decide if they deem you an “expert” or not.
“Self Starter, Detail Oriented etc…”
These are self-promoting terms. As previously mentioned, show examples of your accomplishments that prove these terms. Anyone can call themselves a self-starter, employers want to see proof.
Here are some examples of verbs to use to help replace the overused buzzwords:
- Launched
- Completed
- Managed
- Collaborated
- Facilitated
- Implemented
- Upgraded
- Influenced
It is important to understand that a resume is an employer’s first impression of you, so make it count. Use your voice, don’t just put things on there that you wouldn’t say. Using terms can help, as long as you are using it to drive your paper story forward. Just make sure you are really painting a picture of your accomplishments, not just outlining.
